その日、私…、上代深雪（かみしろみゆき）は警察に呼ばれた。 兄さん夫婦と姫菜さん夫婦が事件に巻き込まれ、殺害されたらしい。 姫菜さんの娘の潤は行方不明。私の甥の一騎は意識不明の重体だそうだ。 遺体を見るまでは全く信じられなかったが、現実は残酷だ。 そこにはかつて義姉だったものが“あった” 顔は比較的にきれいだったから確認はできたが、とても見てはいられない状態だった。 今ここで眠っている甥は一部始終を見たんだろうか。 出来ることなら記憶なんてぶっ飛んじまってたらいいなんて願ってる私は伯母失格なのかもしれない。 そうでもないと…。 あの子は“こわれてしまうから。” 「『あの事件からもう二年か…。早いもんだねえ…。って！私は年寄りかよ！」 そんな声で俺は目を覚ました。 「ここは…。」 「起きたか、いっくん。私がわかるか？オバサンだよ。っても若いけどな。」 朦朧とした意識を覚醒させて、俺は目の前の女性に話し掛けた。 「深雪…さん？」 「大正解。オバサンをつけないとこがエライねぇ。」 そんなことを言ったら俺は斬殺されるだろう。 「そう呼ぶなと言ったのは深雪さんでしょう…。」 「そうだったか？あははははっ（笑）」 （本当にこの人は…。） そう心の中で呟き、辺りを見渡すと、窓の外は夕焼けに染まり、目立った金髪頭がないことに気付いた。 「相沢は帰ったんですか？」 「ああ、あいつは帰ったよ。あのくそガキは、毛唐の真似事なんぞしおってからに。」 （いつの時代の人ですかあなたは…。」 そう俺は心の中で呟いた。やっぱりこの人は苦手だ。 「いっくん。大丈夫か？気を失ったらしいが？」 俺はまた気を失っていたのか…。 「大丈夫ですよ。」 俺はそう答えた。 そうか、ならいいんだ。ところで『あの時のこと』何か思い出したか？」 「…っ！」 俺はその言葉に反応してしまった。 「何か思い出しんだな。」 俺は深雪さんに話すことにした。 「はい。少しだけですが。母さんとおじさんが殺されるところを…。」 「犯人の顔は見たのか！」 深雪さんは語気を強めてそう言った。 「いいえ。そこまでは…。すみません…。」 深雪さんは残念そうに、 「そうか、仕方ないさ。悪かったな。そんな顔すんなよ、せっかくの色男が台無しだせ。それにいっくんは今、軽くやつれて沖田総司みたいで格好いいんだからよ。」 と言って頬笑みかけた。 「さて、帰るとしますか。じゃあな、いっくん。」 と言って、背を向けた。 「気をつけて。」 俺がそう言うと、深雪さんは振り替えった。 「いっくん、無理に思い出そうとなんてするなよ。思い出さないほうがいい事だってあるんだ。一人であんまり背負いこむなよ。後、潤は以前として行方不明だそうだ。まだ望みはあるぞ。」 俺は「はい。」とだけ答えると、深雪さんは何も言わずに帰っていった。 「“望みはある”…。か」 潤は俺をかばったんですよ、深雪さん。嘘つきですね俺は…。あの時なにがあったのか思い出しましたよ。 それに犯人の顔は見ました。 あの『化け物』の顔を…。 月明かりに照らされて黒い鎧が鈍い輝きを放っている。その剣は俺の母さんを貫いていた。 ドサリという音がなり、母さんの体が倒れ、ピクピクとけいれんした後完全に動かなくなった。 化け物は俺たちの存在に気付くと、母さんの血で染まった剣を片手にゆっくりと近づいてきた。 俺たちは金縛りでもあったかのように動けず、声も出せなかった。 蛇にに睨まれた蛙は動けなくなるというが、 俺は絶対的な死の恐怖を前にして完全に動けなくなっていた。 目の前の化け物が剣を振り下ろそうとしている。 俺は死を覚悟した。 「一騎っ！」 ドンッと俺は誰かに突き飛ばされた。 俺の顔に何か生暖かいものがかかった。 それが潤の血だと気付くのに数秒近くかかった。 「潤っ！貴様ァァァ！」 おれは化け物にむかって拳を振りかざした。 なぜか化け物は動かない。だが、俺の拳が化け物をとらえる前に奴の拳が俺の脇腹を直撃。俺は吹き飛ばされると同時に意識を失った。 「父さん、母さん、おじさん、おばさん、潤・・・。俺は必ず仇は討つ。おれが…。」 俺は拳を握り締め呟いた。 「あの化け物を殺す。」 |
