仮面ライダーザベル　第五話
　その紅い瞳はまさに獲物を狙う猛禽類の如くである。
武器を構え、凶器の先端を相手に見据え
じっと飛び掛る隙を狙っているようであった。




「でえぇぇぇい！」

　光は大きく飛び上がり、狼狽する悪魔の頭上から
一直線に刃を振り下ろした。
紫炎を纏った刀身は相手の眉間を縦に大きく切り裂く。
　ハイエナに似た風貌の悪魔は傷口から炎を噴出させながら
大きく口を開け、声にならない声を上げて背中から倒れ付した。
その体が霧散していくとソールが浮かび上がる。
　光は大きく息を吐く。今日も無事に人を襲う悪魔を倒せて良かった。

（ああ、順調で何よりだ）

　ザベルも満足げな声で言う。
自分の体を元に戻すために必要なソールが
手に入ることは結構なことであった。
　光が背伸びをすると、はるか上空の巨大な魔方陣がうつる。
陽炎のような揺らめきは常に絶えることがない。
その巨大さは街を飲み込むほどかもしれない。
それも関わらず、普通の人間には見えず、
悪魔と、その力を借りる自分だけに見える。

「何でもいいから情報が欲しいな」
（そうだな。まあ、それは後にしてさっさと帰るぞ。腹が減った）

　自分の過去に関わるかもしれない問題でありながら、
今は胃を満たすことの方が重要なようだ。
　光は苦笑しながら、ザベルはそれを気にせず、変身を解こうとして、

（――！　光、右だ！）

　光は反射的に振り向いた。同時に何かの破裂音が響くの捉える。
庇うようにして構えた右手の甲を何かが抉り取るように通過した。
　光は衝撃に倒れる。手の甲からは鮮血が溢れていく。

（おい！　無事か！？）
「ぐ……！　何とか……」

　傷口を押さえながら周囲を警戒する。
右手は真っ赤に染まり、地面を濡らしていく。
　どこから、何が襲ってきたのか。それらしい影は何も無い。
痛みがドラムを叩くように一定のリズムで脳を叩く。
顔面蒼白になりながら呼吸を整えようとしていると、

（――向こうだ！）

　ザベルの示す方を見ると、
人影が立ち去ろうとしている瞬間であった。

「まっ……待て！」

　僅かによろめきながら立ち上がる光の声に、
影が立ち止まり振り向いた。
　真紅に輝く双眸が一直線に光を睨む。
猛禽類が獲物を狙うような、
逃げることのかなわない、そんな風に思わせる目だ。
　緊張に体が硬直する。そのまま次の攻撃をされるのかと思ったが、
影は首を戻し、闇にまぎれて姿を消した。
　光は全身に冷や汗をかく。血はゆっくりと滴っていた。




自室にて、光は鈴から怪我の治療を受けていた。
消毒液の染み込んだ綿を傷口に当てられるたびに
小さな悲鳴を上げていた。

「でも、傷はそんなに酷くないから良かった」

　鈴はガーゼを張り、包帯を巻きながら安堵する。
変身しているときは治癒能力が増すのか、
家に戻ってきたときには出血も止まり傷も少しふさがっていた。
しかしあの時変身を解いていたら、
手首から先ごと吹き飛ばされていたかもしれないと思うとぞっとしない。
鈴は包帯の先をはさみで切り縛って治療を終える。
　光はゆっくりと握りこぶしを作り
感触を確かめると若干の痛みを感じる。
これでは右手を使うのは難しい。
その様子をザベルがつっかえ棒にぶら下がりながら見ていた。

「私が気づかなければどうなっていたか。感謝しろよ」

　いつも通りの口調で光に言う。
あと少し気づくのが遅れていたら、
致命的な傷もなりかねなかっただろう。

「でも隠れて攻撃するなんて卑怯な奴だよ。
今度会ったら借りを返さないとなっ」

　光は闘志を燃やして宣言するが、

「けど、利き腕が使えないんじゃな……。どうするか……」
「ふむ……ならば、新しい技でも教えてやろう」
「技？　どんなだよ」
「なに、簡単だ。すぐに出来るだろう。ただ教えるのは明日だがな」

　そう言ってザベルは目を閉じて寝てしまった。




同じ頃、昼間に光が戦った場所に二つの影がいた。
ハイエナに似た風貌のハイネデモス――
首に一本の牙を首に下げたアインファング。
傍らには二本の牙を下げたツヴァイファング。
二体は自分達の弟が消滅した地面に立っていた。
　アインファングが鼻を引くつかせている。
単独行動に出た弟が戻ってこないから
匂いを追ってきてみればここで途切れてしまっている。
同時に人間と悪魔の混ざった奇妙な匂いも感じる。
人間と協力し悪魔を狩る悪魔がいるらしいが、
恐らくそいつにやられたのかもしれない。
　ツヴァイファングは歯噛みしながら怒りに震えている。
今すぐにでも手当たり次第に暴れまわりそうな弟を横目にしながら、
アインファングは別の悪魔の匂いに気づいた。
　二体は匂いを辿っていくと、雑居ビルの屋上へとたどり着いた。
月の光は雲にさえぎられて辺りは真っ暗であるが、
二体は夜目がきくためさほど苦にはならない。
慎重に屋上の中心へと歩いていく。

「止まれ」
　
二体が身を竦ませて動きを止める。
屋上の出口、その上の屋根の縁に足をかけた姿勢で
悪魔がハイネデモスに武器を向けていた。
不覚にも気配を感じなかった。

「こっ、こりゃ、先客がいたのか……。
別にあんたになにかするつもりはねぇ」

　ハイネデモスは冷や汗を流しながらゆっくりと話しかけた。

「実は、俺達の弟がやられちまってな……、
あんた、何かしらねぇか？」
「ああ、昼間のか。悪魔同士が戦ってたが、
お前らに似た奴が倒されたな。やった奴は悪魔狩りかな」

　以外にもあっさりと答えが返ってきた。
やはり例の悪魔狩りの仕業のようだ。
　ハイネデモスは互いに目配せして、
すぐにでも行動に移したかったがそうもいかなかった。
背後の悪魔は一向に殺気を収める気配が無いからだ。
これでは動いた瞬間にやられる。
　アインファングが刺激しないように下手に出て話しかける。

「ところで、あんた中々の腕をもってそうだが……なにもんだい？」
「別に。ただのハンターだ」

二体がビクリと、体を震わせた。
ハンター――賞金稼ぎだ。これでは自分達の素性がばれたら
ますます逃げられない。それどころか間違いなく殺される。

「なっ、なあ旦那。あんたに頼みがあるっ。
弟の仇を討ってくれないかっ？　報酬はちゃんと出すからよっ」

　今度はへつらうようにして言う。
しばしの沈黙が流れる。ハンターならば
相応の金を渡せば引き受けるような奴が多い。
この悪魔もそうであってほしい。
どうやら賭けに勝ったようだ。
背後の殺気が一気に引いていく。
　ハイネデモスはゆっくりと振り向き、初めて相手を見る。
頭部に猛禽類の羽が両側頭部から生えており、
双眸も一度掴まれれば逃げることの出来ぬ双爪のようである。

「名前を聞いてもいいか？」

　アインファングが恐る恐る名前を聞く。

「……ボーグアイだ」

　彼は一言呟くと寝そべってしまった。
　二体のハイネデモスはその場を急いで離れる。
ある程度距離を取ると、ツヴァイファングが兄に話しかける。

「いいのかよあんな約束しちまって」
「馬鹿、ここは悪魔狩りと戦わせちまうんだよ。
その後で俺らが残った方を片付けちまえばいいだろうが」
「なるほど。で、金目のものは全部いただくと」
「そうだ。だから俺らは高みの見物といこうじゃないか」

　二体は獰猛な犬歯をぎらつかせて夜闇の中低く笑いあった。




　雨の降り出しそうな昼上がりの曇り空。
街では人の群れが行きかう中、
空中をポリンが楽しげに飛翔していた。
その姿は周囲に保護色となって溶け込んでいた。
　彼女の力の一つである。
最近はこの力を使って外出するようになった。
以前、光とザベルの喧嘩を見て思い出し、
最初から使っていればよかったのだと突っ込まれたが、
頭からすっかりと抜け落ちていた。
　とはいえ、周囲に溶け込んではいるが彼女が未熟であるためか、
動いていると輪郭がはっきり浮かび上がってしまい、
何処にいるのかが目視できてしまう。
まあ、空を飛んでいる限りは人の視界に入ることは
まず無いといっていいだろう。
　こうして外出できるようになったことから、
ポリンは何か役に立ちたいと懇願した。
そこで光と鈴は悪魔が現れるかどうか偵察という役目を与えた。
　平日は光たちは学校で動くことが出来ないし、
ザベルが率先して働くことはありえない。
だからこうしてポリンに動いてもらっていた。
　しかし今のところ悪魔を見かけることは無かった。
やはり人目の少ない夕暮れから夜にかけて行動しているからであろう。
今日までただの散歩とかしていた。
　そんなわけでいつも通りの、
のんびりとした散歩を楽しんでいたポリンだったが、
残念なことにこの日は違っていた。
　とある雑居ビルに休憩をするために降りた。
魔法を解くと半透明の体が現れる。
風は緩やかに流れ、陽射しもあいまって実に心地よい。
可愛らしい欠伸をして屋上の出口の屋根に座りこみ、
背伸びをすると急に辺りが暗くなる。
　ポリンはその姿勢のまま時が止まったかのように静止した。
背後には両側頭部に羽を生やした悪魔、
ボーグアイが、いつのまにかポリンを見ていた。
しばらく見つめあう二人。
さながら御伽噺の野獣と妖精の邂逅のようである。
　ポリンは伸ばした腕を下ろし愛らしい笑みを、
しかし青ざめた顔をしながら立ち去ろうとして、
突然伸ばさされた腕に掴み捕られた。

「離して下さい～！　ポリンは美味しくないですよ～！」

　脱出しようとするポリンだが、
相手からすれば小鳥がもがき暴れる程度である。

「悪魔どころかこんな世界にシュプライトーがいるとはな」

　ボーグアイはしげしげと眺めるがさして興味なさそうに呟いた。
ふと、例の悪魔狩りについて、
たいした情報が得られるとは思えなかったが聞いてみた。

「おい」
「ひぃ！　な、なな、何でしょうか！？」
「この辺に悪魔を狩ってる奴がいるはずだ。知らないか？」
「……えっと――」
「早く答えろ」
「うひぃ！　すっ、すいません！
たっ、たぶん……光さんたちのことでしょうか……？」

　涙目になりながらポリンは答えた。すでに恐怖は限界突破である。
しかしボーグアイのほうからすれば思わぬ収穫だ。
無駄な行動に出ずにすむ。ボーグアイはポリンを顔の間近に寄せる。
獰猛な肉食獣に迫られたみたいにポリンが食われると思い騒ぎ立てる。

「黙れ」
「うぅ……ひっく……」

　ポリンの口から嗚咽が漏れる。
ボーグアイは嘆息しながら居場所を聞いてみたが、
ポリンは泣くばかりである。
　
「ちっ……おい、今日の夜、この前悪魔と戦った場所に来るよう伝えろ。
来なかったら人間を襲う。いいな、伝えろよ」

　手を離すとポリンが落ち葉のようにひらひらと落下していく。
途中で開放されたことに気づくと、
ボーグアイを一瞥して、全速力でその場から離れていった。
　その姿を見送ると彼は横になり寝てしまった。




夜もふけた頃、空からは淡い月光が
舞台を照らすように大地に注がれていた。
先ほどまで雨が降り続いていたが、
今は晴れ渡り、美しい月夜の晩を迎えていた。
寂れた廃工場が近くに見え、
さながら一個のオブジェのようである。
　光たちが到着する。光の右手にはいまだ包帯が巻かれていた。
相手はすでに待ち構えており、

「おい！　着てやったぞ！」
「遅かったな。ふっ、その手の傷、
まだ治ってないようだな。まあ当然か」
「あのときの攻撃してきたのはお前だったのか！
ポリンまで泣かせやがって！　倍にして借りを返してやるからな！」
「出来ればいいがな」

　ボーグアイは組んだ腕を解き、光を睨む。
　光も負けじと眼光鋭く睨み返す。
その二人の様子を離れた場所で鈴とポリンが見つめていた。

「お前が悪魔と協力してる人間だとして、肝心の悪魔はどうした？」
「私のことだ。ふん、ご指名はありがたいことだが、
身の程知らずの貴様に我が実力をたっぷりと味あわせてやろうっ」

　ザベルが前に出て威勢よく指を相手に指す。
ボーグアイはその宙を飛ぶ珍獣に視線を向け、そのまま無視した。

「おい！　お前も私を馬鹿にする気か！
このザベル様を怒らせるとどうなるか分かってのことかっ！」

　ぬいぐるみが喚いているようにしか
見えない光景にボーグアイが鼻で笑う。

「ザベル……ね。同名にしても、
もうちょいましな姿で出直してきた方がいいんじゃないか？」
「同名ではないっ。私がその本人だ！」
「知らないのか？　……ザベルは死んだってのが主な見解だ。
ブラドといっしょにな。それでも……まあ、可能性の範疇だがな」
「ブラド……？」
「おい貴様、何か知っているようだな。答えろ！」

　光は呟かれた新たな単語に眉根を寄せ、
ザベルも騒ぐのをやめ問いかけようとするが、

「さあ、無駄話は終わりだ。一応依頼を受けているんでね」

　ボーグアイは会話を打ち切って戦闘態勢に入る。
背中からライフル状の武器を取り出し肩に担ぐ。

「仕方ない光、まずはこいつを倒してからだ」
「分かったっ、いくぞ！」
「よしっ、変身！」

　光の中にザベルが入り込む。黒い疾風が巻き起こり全身を包み込む。
腕を振り払うと、疾風は一気に吹き払われ変身が完了する。

「ほう……少しは楽しめそうだ」
　
ボーグアイが感心するように呟く。どのような原理かは知らないが、
それなりの強さは持っているのだろう。ボーグアイは小さく笑う。
　彼は手にしたライフルを構え真横に走り出した。

（奴の飛び道具に注意しろ。
技を教えたとはいえ、右手が使えないことに変わりは無い。
動き回ってかく乱しろ）

「ああっ、いくぞ！」

　光もザベルの助言を受けて同じく走り出す。
　ボーグアイは肩越しにライフルを構え
引き金を立て続けに引いていく。
音速で飛来する弾丸が光の体を掠めていく。
　地面に出来た水溜りを跳ねさせながら、
舞台を廃工場の敷地に移し、光は急いで手近な物陰に隠れる。
呼吸を整えながら顔を出そうとして物に弾が命中し異音を奏でる。
二、三発連続して甲高い音が鳴るが急にしん、と静まり返る。

（――上だ！）

　光は頭上を見上げると、
荷台に乗ったボーグアイがライフルを構えていた。
急いで前方に身を投げ出すと、先ほどまでいた場所を銃弾が穿つ。
　向き直り左手に剣を生み出す。
とにかく接近して銃撃をかわすしかない。
そう判断した光は跳躍して荷台に降り立つ。
　ライフルを構えるには不適切な距離。
相手がよりも素早く下方から切り上げる。
固い感触が腕に伝わっていく。刃は銃身に防がれていた。

「接近すればどうにかなると思ったか？　甘いぜっ」

　切っ先を基点に銃身を回転させて持ち替える。
そのまま銃身を掴んで銃床でこめかみを殴りつけた。
一瞬意識が落ちかけてうなだれる光。

（光！　腕を上げろ！）

　脳内をガツンと叩くようなザベルの声に覚醒し両腕を交差すると、
相手の蹴りがぶつかり荷台から落下する。
背中から落下し肺から酸素が搾り出される。
が、悠長に待ってもいられない。
倒れた姿勢のまま転がるとボーグアイが
落下しながら銃床を突き出し地面の土を飛散させた。
　やはり左手一本ではバランスを欠いてしまう。
慣れない左手では剣も碌に振れず力も入らない。
　光は立ち膝の体勢で、

「おい！　アレ使うぞ！」
（やめておけっ、付け焼刃の技では
とても当たってくれるような相手ではないぞっ）
「そんなこと言ってられないだろ！」

　構わず右手に炎のイメージを浮かべる。
ハンドボール大の紫の火球が掌で渦巻きだす。
　ボーグアイはそれに気づくが構わず
ライフルを構えて引き金に指をかける。

「くらえぇ！」

　火球と銃弾、同時に放たれる。
弾は辛くも二の腕を掠めるのにとどまり、
火球はボーグアイを直撃する。
上半身を飲み込むほどの爆発が起こり
逆転の一撃が成功したかに見えたが――

「なんだよあれ……？」
（あれも魔法だ……）

　空気が螺旋を描くようにボーグアイの中心で回転している。
ライフルを横に構え、銃床部分についた
宝石らしき物体がエメラルドに輝いている。
そこから風を発生させ、火球を四散させたようだ
上半身が白煙を上げてはいるが、
それほどダメージは与えられていない。
　おそらくもっとも傷を負わせれたはずの技が防がれ光の動きが止まる。
その隙を突きようにボーグアイが走り出し、光を横へと蹴り飛ばした。
　飛沫を上げながら水溜りに倒れる光。泥を拭って上半身を起こすと、
目の前には漆黒の銃口が置かれていた。

「道具も使わずに魔法を使うとは、素質はあるようだな」

　感心した声が光にかけられる。
剣を生み出すことや魔法を使うことは
貴族など強い悪魔でないと出来ないからだ。
しかし、素質はあってもその戦い方は未熟以外何者でもない。
もっと修練を積めばよき戦いができたのだが。

「光っ」
　
いままで声をかけることも出来なかった鈴が物陰から出て叫んだ。
ボーグアイがそちらを一瞥する。傍らには昼間捕まえたポリンもいた。

「一つ聞きたいんだが、悪魔の力を借りてまで、お前は何で戦うんだ？」
「関係ない街の人や、鈴に危害を加えるのが許せないからだ！」

　光は即答した。それを聞いたボーグアイが一瞬だが
何か思いつめたような表情をしたのを光は気づかなかった。

「まっ、俺にはどうでもいいことだな」

　ボーグアイは話を打ち切って、
引き金に力を込めようとする。

（光……！）

　ザベルが頭の中で叫ぶ。
剣を振ろうにも、今の体勢では満足に振り切れない。
魔法を放つにしてもやはり相手の方が早い。
一瞬でも隙があればいいのだ。
それは光も考えは同じである。しかしよい案が浮かばない。
焦りに水溜りに浸かる手を握り締めふと、閃いた。

（おい、ザベル……一つ考えがあるんだが……）
（ここはお前に任せる。やれっ）

　ザベルに伝えようとするも彼はそれだけ言って黙ってしまう。
光は相手から見えぬように右手を背中に回し水面すれすれで炎を生み出す。

「うん？　てめぇ何を――！」

　ボーグアイが彼の行動に気づくが、僅かに光の方が早かった。
炎を一気に燃え上がらせながら腕を水に突っ込むと、
一気に水蒸気が膨れ上がり二人を飲み込んだ。
　視界をふさがれたボーグアイが光を見失う。
引き金を引くが弾は虚しく空を切るだけであった。
仕方なく魔法で蒸気を一気に払おうとした瞬間、
横合いから突然の衝撃が襲う。
風が吹き蒸気が晴れていく。
完全に消えると、そこには馬乗りになりながら
首筋に剣の切っ先を押し付ける光と
胸元に銃口を押し付けるボーグアイがいた。
互いに動くことが出来ない。
しかし銃弾が鎧に防がれる可能性の高い分、
ボーグアイが不利であった。

「俺の負けだな。殺せ」

　ボーグアイが舌打ちしながら答えた。
光が僅かに迷う。

（どうした光？　ここで倒しておかないと厄介だぞ）

　ザベルはそう言うが、光はなぜか躊躇っていた。
このまま逃せば人を襲う可能性があるのだから
止めを刺すのは間違ってはいない。しかし……。

「あやまれ」
「は？」
「先にポリンに謝れっ」
（……何言ってるのだお前は？）
「えっ、いや、ポリンを泣かせたんだから謝らせるのは当然だろ……？」

　ザベルもボーグアイもその台詞に唖然とした。
命のやり取りをしている最中で何を言っているのか
理解できなかった。

「ふははははっ……ここでそんな台詞が吐けるとはな。面白い奴だっ」

　ボーグアイが笑いながら言った。
光は思わず赤面してしまう。
恥ずかしさを払うように、

「ほら、早くしろっ」

「お前に一つ良いことを教えてやるよ」
「なに？」

　ボーグアイはぼそりと、光に呟いた。
それを聞いた光は、驚きながら小声で話しかけ、
小さく頷くと剣を喉元で振り切った。




　ボーグアイがぐったりと横たわった。
ゆっくりと立ち上がって離れると、

「よぉし、悪魔狩り動くな！」

　顔を上げて声のした方へと向くと、
鈴を羽交い絞めにするツヴァイファングの姿があった。

「ごくろうさん。そっちに勝たれちまうとてこずりそうだったんでなぁ」

　光の背後からはアインファングが笑いながら歩いてくる。
ずっと日和見していた二体は決着がついたと見ると、
すぐさま行動に移した。正直ボーグアイを相手にするよりは
光のほうが敵討ちもできて丁度良かった。
二対一ならまず負けることは無い。
いかにも卑怯な算段であった。

　「さて、弟の仇をとらせてもらうぜ。
動いたら、どうなるか分かるようなぁ？」

　ツヴァイファングが腕に力を込める。
苦しげに呻く鈴を光は黙ってみていた。その拳は怒りに震えている。

「それじゃあ、死ねぇ！」

　アインファングが腕を振り上げる。
鈍く輝く爪が光の肉体を裂こうとした時、
一発の銃声が響き渡った。
　くぐもった叫び声が鈴の側で聞こえたかと思うと、
ツヴァイファングが眉間を打ち抜かれて地に伏した。
仰向けに倒れていた姿勢でボーグアイがライフルを構えていた。

「なっ！　お前死んだんじゃ！？」
「どうせこうなると思ってたからな。一芝居うたせてもらったぜ」
「てめぇ、だましやがって！」
「こっちの台詞だアホが」

　アインファングが激昂するとボーグアイは肩をすくめて答えた。

「形勢逆転って奴か？　覚悟しろよっ」

　光が剣を構え、ボーグアイがライフルを構える。
逆に二対一という分の悪い状況に陥りアインファングは戦意をくじかれる。

「どのみちお前らを逃すつもりは無かったしな。
……お前ら、ブルート一味だろ？」
「ブルート？　なんだそれ」
　ボーグアイの問いに光は眉根を寄せる。

「あっ、ああっそうさ。頭がくりゃ怖いモンはねぇ！
　てめぇら全員ぶっ殺されちまうぜ！」

　アインファングは開き直ったかのように威勢よく答える。

「ふっ、その前に自分の命を心配しとけ」
「くっ……くそ！」

　ボーグアイは銃口を向けながら言う。
アインファングは後ずさりし、後方へ跳躍する。
　逃がすつもりは無い。銃床の宝石が輝く。
銃口に目に見えるほどの空気の螺旋が現れる。
狙いを定め高速で回転する螺旋の渦に銃弾をぶつける。
刹那、弾丸は破裂音を放ち螺旋と共に射出される。
　瞬きの間にアインファングの体を背中から突き破った。
絶叫が木霊し、空中で悪魔の体が霧散していきソールが浮かび上がった。
　ボーグアイはライフルを仕舞うと黙って立ち去ろうとする。

「おい！　待てよ！」
「何だ？　ああ、勝負のことか？　まあお前の勝ちだから――」


　光は変身をといて声をかけると、ボーグアイが振り返る。
鈴が光の側に駆け寄り、

「助けてくれてありがとう」
「なに？」
「鈴を助けてくれたからさ、勝負のことは良いよ。」
「……そうか」
　
　ボーグアイは肩をすくめて歩き出す。
前方からはちょうどザベルがソールを
取り込んでこちらに戻くるところだった
互いに睨みあいながら、
「……今日は光が手を怪我していたから勝てたようなものだ。
そこのところを間違えるなよ？」
「怪我……ああ――」

　ボーグアイが思い出したように振り返る。
後ろで騒ぐザベルを無視して、

　「光、といったか。傷つけた本人が言うのもなんだが……
怪我が治ったら今度こそ決着をつけるぞ」
「えっ……ああ、分かったっ」
「それとポリン、か」
「はっ、はいっ！」

　名前を呼ばれてポリンが鈴の影に隠れながら返事をした。
相当怖がられていることに苦笑しながら、

「悪かったな」

　それだけ言うと、再び歩き出した。

「光！　今ならやれるぞ！　あいつの背中を思いっきり刺してやれ！」
「おまえなぁ……」

　無視されたことに腹を立てている
ザベルに呆れながら彼の背を見送っていた。
癖のありそうな悪魔だが、それは不思議と悪い感じはしなかった。
